“Jesus does not deny that we should love God, but he knows (as does the writer of the letter of John) that there (with God) is not the rub. God may be ever present, but God doesn’t fall among thieves, God doesn’t hold something against us. God doesn’t get sick; God doesn’t mope; God doesn’t whine. In a sense, we can easily love God with all our hearts and minds and souls, all our strength – as the lawyer that questions Jesus certainly does, as the Priest and the Levite in the parable surely do; but . . . can we love our neighbors as ourselves? Do we stop to bind up their wounds, find them rooms, to watch with them through the night?"
